We are officially in holiday season, having greeted our tricker treaters on Monday, we’re now digging out our hats, gloves and scarfs and bulk buying toffee apples ready for bonfire night!

The unfortunate downside to all of this holiday fun, is that we’re sometimes not as careful with our homes as we normally would be. Holding bonfire night celebrations at our homes and popping down to local displays, can be so exciting that we can forget to check whether all of our windows and doors are locked. So it’s no surprise that the 5th of November is the worst day of the year for burglaries.

To protect your home this bonfire night, we’ve put together a list of tips to help you keep your property safe:

Always ensure all doors and windows are locked, even if you’re staying at home

When hosting a bonfire party, it can be tempting to leave your front door unlocked so that it’s easier for guests who are coming and going. While this might seem easier for you, it also makes it easier for uninvited guests to enter your home. So it’s best to keep them locked, even if you’re just in the garden.

If you’ve decided to pop out, make sure to check all of the doors and windows are locked before you go.

Give the impression that someone is home

If you are going out, leave the TV or radio on, as well as a few lights around the house. This will make it seem like someone’s home and make your property less of a target for opportunistic thieves.

Hide away your gadgets

Most homes now have a variety of gadgets, from PCs to tablets. Keep these safe by moving them out of sight.

Clear your outside space
Around this time of year there tends to be an increase in vandalism. Make sure you put any valuable or important items away into garages, sheds or indoors. If you have a car, it’s a good idea to store it off the road for the night, either on a drive or in a garage if you have one.
